It's heartbreaking to contrast the hope and the spirit of the people pushing for change in Iran last week to the murder and chaos today. It was stirring to see women refusing to be cowed, demanding freedom and modernism be brought to the country. So many people, so much hope.

And since this is my journal and not a circumspect newspaper: A rigged vote. That twat Ahmadinejad crushing all that hope and causing bloodshed by rigging the election and trapping Iran in that hateful cycle yet again. That utter twat Ayatollah Khamenei refusing to have the balls to support an investigation (I guess human rights aren't too much of an issue). Well, until the people continued fighting and demanded and pushed and showed such bravery in refusing to be cowed.

Why are the EU and Obama being so crap about it all? You're 'disappointed' and 'concerned'? Stern words! That'll show 'em.

I hope that the general public in Iran overturn this absolute travesty, this joke of an election. I hope that, if our leaders can't or won't express more than 'disappointment', that people the world over give their support and their empathy to these people.

Damn right. Did they really think people would fall for a landslide? Ahmadinejad winning in his opponent's hometown, oh please. I hear another protest schdeuled for today was canceled but I pray this is not the end. I pray more countries stand up and say it was wrong but mostly that the Iranian people do so because the revolution must be started by the people.

Ohhh, so THAT'S why someone yelled out "If they win this then they can win an election in Iran" at last nights quiz. [/uneducated]

Because that'll play right into Ahmadinejad's hands. He wants Europe and, especially, the US to start making pro-opposition noises; it fits in with his narrative that you're either with him or you're working for/being manipulated by foreign forces. Check out the signs at the pro-Ahmadinejad rally today such as "NO BRITISH EMBASSY, NO BBC". The foreign Embassy is controlling the protests and the foreign media (and incidentally how good an investment is the BBC's Persian service proving?) is provoking them. Obama and the EU are playing it right I think - keep it cautious, don't say much, let things in Iran play out.

Human rights? You must be joking! This is the country that last year executed a 16 year old girl for breaking Islamic law because she was RAPED!!! It was one of the most heartbreaking things I've ever watched. We have to be careful how we portray Mousavi tho as he is no reformer either!!!! The most significant thing tho, is even if they manage to crush it this time, the seeds have been planted, the younger generation WANT change and I believe this will only grow.

Was v impressed to see the Iranian football team openly supporting Mousavi too - that was quite a BIG thing for them to do so publicly given he repercussions theyor their families could face.
